Jason Gillespie's fitness assessment is likely to take place under the supervision of Australian physiotherapist Errol Alcott in Sydney on January 5 & 6.

Australia's pursuit of the VB Series trophy begins against New Zealand in a day-night match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday 11 January.

The VB Series, this summer contested by Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, involves 12 qualifying matches with each team playing the other two sides four times each.

Following the qualifying matches the top two sides will then contest a best-of-three finals series with matches in Melbourne (Wednesday 6 February), Sydney (Friday 8 February) and, if required, Sydney again (Sunday 10 February).

Tickets for matches in the VB Series are available from usual outlets.

This season's VB Series marks the sixth year that Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) has sponsored the summer one-day international competition. Sponsors of the tournament since 1996-97, CUB signed a new five-year agreement with the ACB in June 2001 that will play a major role in ensuring cricket's financial stability.

For the first time during its association with the ACB, CUB has aligned a major brand, Victoria Bitter, with the naming rights to the series.

New Zealand is expected to confirm its squad for the VB Series in early January.

South Africa has already announced that pace bowler Charl Langeveldt, batsman Jonty Rhodes and all-rounder Justin Kemp will fly in for the VB Series to replace three, as yet, unnamed players in the squad already in Australia. It is also likely that left-arm spinner Nicky Boje, who has missed the first two matches in the Orange Test Series through injury, will supplement the tour party, although this is yet to be confirmed.

Australia A will play two matches, against the New Zealanders in Brisbane on Tuesday 8 January, and against the South Africans in Adelaide on Thursday 10 January. Both matches are day-night fixtures and tickets are available from the usual outlets.
