Mumbai to host New Year festival
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 11, 2001

Three of the game's most venerated clubs - Marylebone Cricket Club, Melbourne Cricket Club and the Cricket Club of India (CCI) - will usher in the New Year by playing in a triangular at the hallowed Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The Spirit of Cricket Festival will be a 45-over-a-side innings and will be played from December 28, 2001 to January 3, 2002.

Wisden.com columnist Sanjay Manjrekar will lead the CCI, which has a galaxy of former India players, while Mike Gatting will lead the MCC. Tony Dodemaide, who played 10 Tests and 24 one-day internationals for Australia, is the manager of MCC.

The criteria for selection was that the players had to be general members of the club they represent, over 30 years of age and should not have played any competitive cricket at national or international level in the last four years.

Talking to Wisden, CCI president Rajsingh Dungarpur said: "I think the cricketing world will never forgive us if the three great clubs fail to be the custodians of the game. Though the tournament will be played in a competitive manner, the spirit of the game will not be a casualty."

In keeping with the festival spirit, the CCI has invited several dignitaries from the world of cricket to grace the occasion. Among those expected are Ted Dexter, the MCC president, Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie, John Jameson, Raman Subba Row, Hanif Mohammad, Zaheer Abbas, Imtiaz Ahmed, Fazal Mahmood, Michael Tissera, Ranjit Fernando, Duleep Mendis, Ranjan Madugulle and Sidhat Wettimuny.
