Hayden: 2001's top scorer
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 13, 2001

  • Matthew Hayden scored his fifth Test century. It was his fourth of 2001, his second at Adelaide, and his first against South Africa - his highest score against them in four previous Tests was 40. His runs took him past Brian Lara as the leading Test runscorer of 2001 so far.
  • Scorers of 1000 runs in 2001:
Matthew Hayden - 1284 in 25 innings (one match to play)
    Brian Lara - 1151 in 18 innings
Herschelle Gibbs - 1147 in 21 innings (one match to play)
    Mahela Jayawardene - 1035 in 18 innings.

  • When Shane Warne dismissed Lance Klusener it was his 415th wicket in Tests, taking him past Wasim Akram (414) into fourth place on the alltime list. Only Courtney Walsh (519), Kapil Dev (434) and Richard Hadlee (431) lie ahead.

  • When Warne dismissed Gary Kirsten in the second innings, it was his 200th Test wicket in Australia. Only Dennis Lillee (231) has taken more.

  • Australia's victory was their second-largest by a runs margin over South Africa. They beat them by 530 runs at Melbourne in 1910-11.

  • Herschelle Gibbs (78) made his highest score against Australia. His best score in three previous Tests was 54, at Sydney in 1997-98.

  • Damien Martyn scored his third Test century, and his first at home, in his 20th match. It was also his first against South Africa, whom he had not faced since playing that fateful shot at Sydney in January 1994.

  • Justin Langer made 116, his 11th Test hundred and his fourth in the last five Tests. Since returning to the side against England at The Oval in August, Langer's run of scores reads: 102*, 104, 18*, 123, 75, 0, 116 - 537 runs in seven innings at an average of 107.4.

  • Langer made a century in his first innings against South Africa, and his first run was his 3000th in Tests. He is playing in his 46th Test.

  • Steve and Mark Waugh are playing their 100th Test together, 100 more than any other twins have managed in Test cricket. Steve is playing in his 143rd match and Mark in his 120th.
