Ashes series to break for one-dayers
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 18, 2001

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today announced the dates for the 2002-03 Ashes tour of Australia. England will play five Tests, plus a triangular one-day tournament involving Sri Lanka, before going to southern Africa for the World Cup. The Tests are in the same order as last time, culminating in Melbourne and Sydney at Christmas and New Year, but for the first time in many years, the Ashes series will be interrupted by a batch of one-dayers. This means the second and third Tests will be played back-to-back, something England's chairman of selectors, David Graveney, believes is the way things are going.

"Matches tend to be back-to-back these days - that's the modern diet. Most countries try and get three clear days between matches as is happening in India," said Graveney.

"It's a unique situation for next year because of the World Cup but we're very happy to be getting the right sort of rest period for our players."

Graveney added that neither Darren Gough nor Andy Caddick would be guaranteed a place in the tour party.

"They both realise that giving up their opportunity and allowing others to tour in their place means that if the other players do well they will have to wait for their opportunity again," he said.

"That said, they are two of the best bowlers we have so they might well feature. There are guys in the Academy side who might be in contention, but trying to predict what the team will be in a year's time is very difficult."
