ICC 'should punish England'
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 21, 2001

We asked for your views on Michael Vaughan's controversial dismissal. Was it a moment of madness? Or were there few Indians to appeal being unsportsmanlike, as Vaughan suggested and Nasser Hussain implied? The e-mails have continued to flow. Here is a third selection of them

  • Feedback 1: `It's the Raj mentality'
  • Feedback 2: `On Ganguly's behalf, I apologise'

    ICC should punish England
Those who believe that there is an "Indian Stand" and an "English Stand" miss the point. Michael Vaughan clearly tried to get the ball under his control by stamping it down with his hand. The ball was not lying dead on the floor and hence was not dead. To suggest that the Indians were not sporting should invite strict action from the ICC as it brings the game to disrepute. But it won't happen because England and India are viewed through separate lenses by Mr Gray and Mr Speed.

Mr Lindsay's reaction here would reveal the ICC's views. Also given the fact that "personal attacks are not allowed", Andrew Flintoff should be banned for a game, as fair play requires that. The Sehwag issue is still not settled as India have been cheated there. Kartikeya Date

    Whinging Poms
This is just yet another example of the English whining when things don't go their way. Admittedly, it is a sad state of affairs where winning matters most but not surprising given the intensity which the games are played in. Vaughan would be better of learning to take it on the chin as most others do and refrain from passing judgment. We can all do without this "holier than thou" hogwash. Pradeep K, Sri Lanka

The poor umpire was quite correct
It was very depressing to see someone write that it was unsporting of the Indians to appeal. You can take my word that if a Ganguly or Tendulkar or Dravid had done half of what Vaughan did, Hussain would have stomped his way towards the umpire screaming like a mad elephant.

And it was still more depressing to hear from a westerner that subcontinental umpires suffer from NFI syndrome. May he please also explain the unbelievably erratic behaviour of umpires like Darryl Harper, and match referees like Mike Denness. In this case the poor umpire gave an absolutely correct decision because someone had appealed and that was acknowledged by Vaughan himself at the press conference. Dr Nirmal Kumar Jain, Jaipur

Any team would have done the same
Michael Vaughan was OUT. Simple as that. I have watched the clip time and time again and my opinion hasn't even slightly altered since the first viewing. His actions were undoubtedly foolish and certainly unlucky because it was somewhat of a freak incident, but to claim that the Indians have been unsporting is totally unfair. Any team I know, including my village team (probably!), would have appealed. Unlucky, certainly; inexplicable, partially; out, definitely. William Fairclough

Criticism of umpires wide of the mark
I disagree with John Beech (click here for his comments). You don't have to generalise that the umpires from the sub continent have the NFI syndrome. You seem to have a very short-term memory. Where were you when Mr.Robinson was out there taking a nap in the middle of Australia-New Zealand game ac couple of weeks back. And by the way, do you remember the Kandy test last year when Hussain & Co. sent Sananth Jayasuriya packing after claiming a catch that clearly bounced off the ground (England was very sporting, I guess!). I know that not everyone is Dickie Bird - and if you think that only the subcontinent's umpires are the ones that have an NFI syndrome, where's your pal Darrell Hair. R.Kari
