Lillee criticises 'dismissive' Buchanan
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 21, 2001

Former Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee has criticised national coach John Buchanan for failing to address Brett Lee's repeated no-balling. "I nearly choked on my cornflakes when I read Buchanan had said he was powerless to stop his bowlers infringing and had virtually given up trying to eradicate the problem," Lillee told the West Australian newspaper.

Lee has bowled 77 no-balls so far this year ("that would be significantly higher had umpire Venkataraghavan paid closer attention during South Africa's second innings in the Adelaide Test," said Lillee) and his front-foot problem has cost him wickets – twice in Adelaide he dismissed a batsman only for the delivery to be ruled illegal.

"More attention should be paid to the no-ball problem, rather than the dismissive attitude of the coach," Lillee continued. "There comes a time when someone is accountable, and I can see only two people who qualify here; the bowler and the coach."

Australian captain Steve Waugh did not escape attention. He too had to get more involved in "this no-ball nonsense" said Lillee.
