Two England captains were among those who received awards in the New Year's Honours List. Nasser Hussain was awarded the OBE for his services to the game. After taking over the England captaincy in 1999, he helped to restore national pride by leading the side to four successive series victories (against Zimbabwe, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) in 2000 and 2001. "This is great news," Hussain said. "Everyone knows how much playing for England means to me and I'm very proud to have been honoured by my country in this way."

Tony Lewis, who led England in five matches in 1972-73, received the CBE in recognition for his services to sport, to broadcasting and to Wales. After a successful playing career, which included leading Glamorgan to the county championship in 1969, he retired in 1974 and went on to became a prominent cricket commentator and journalist. He was appointed president of the MCC in 1998 and was also chairman of the Welsh Tourist Board for almost a decade. He recently spearheaded Wales's successful bid to host the 2010 Ryder Cup.

The man responsible for designing the award-winning new Grandstand at Lord's, Nicholas Grimshaw, was knighted for services to architecture.
