Dawn Inzamam tipped to replace Moin
2 February 2001

Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to ditch Moin Khan and name Inzamam-ul-Haq as captain of the team for the forthcoming tour to New Zealand.

The decision, according to reliable source, was taken at an advisory council meeting at Lahore on Thursday."

"It has been decided to appoint Inzamam as captain. But there is a two-way tie for Inzimam's deputy between Waqar Younis and Saeed Anwar".

Moin Khan, appointed captain until June 2001, is likely to be retained for the trip to New Zealand .

"His performance in the series against England was evaluated and found below par. A captain should be an inspiration for the team and not a liability," the source added.

The official appointment of new captain and the team for the New Zealand tour would be announced on Saturday, if not on Friday.

"As the situation stands at present, Moin has been shown the door. But you never know. There could be a change of heart because there are still two days to go before the announcement is made," the source added.

Interestingly, while the captain has been removed on poor performance, the coach, Javed Miandad, has been retained despite his fourth successive failure at the Test level in two years.

Under Miandad Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe, Australia and England at home while the fourth defeat came on the tour to the West Indies.

If Miandad can claim that his team won the Asia Cup in Dhaka or triangular series in the West Indies or the three-nation tournament in Sharjah, so can Moin who apparently has been targeted for the players differences with Miandad over the share of $1.3million logo money.

Inzamam has been Moin's deputy for the last nine months. He was Pakistan's most successful batsman in the year 2000 when he scored nearly 1,100 runs in 12 Tests.
