Stafford's hat-trick not enough to help ND against Canterbury
Lynn McConnell - 3 February 2001

A hat-trick to Jenny Stafford wasn't enough to help her Northern Districts side to a win over Canterbury in their State Insurance Cup match at Rangiora today.

Canterbury was all out for 235 with a ball to spare in innings with Stafford polishing off the innings with her hat-trick.

She had Maria Fahey stumped for the first wicket, and then bowled Sarah Burke and Hannah Rae.

She finished with three for 35 from her 8.5 overs.

Best of the Canterbury batsmen were Nicola Payne 46, Paula Flannery 33, Haidee Tiffen 31 and Fiona Fraser 24. Forty-one extras were also recorded, made up of 24 wides, 14 no balls and three leg byes.

Northern Districts, if their fielding had been tighter could have restricted Canterbury to under 200 but there were dropped catches and overthrows which allowed Canterbury off the hook.

But even that wouldn't have been enough to halt Canterbury in their quest for success.

ND were all out for 100 in 42.4 overs. The highest score in their innings were 23 extras. Katherine Spence scored 18 and Skye Sandilands scored 16.

Timaru teenaged off spinner Maria Fahey had an outstanding day with the ball taking four for 21 off her 10 overs. Haidee Tiffen took two for 10 off 6.4 while Sarah Burke took two for 14 off her eight.

Wellington scored 175/8 against Auckland, in Auckland but the defending State Insurance Cup champions cruised to an eight wicket win with CLEAR White Ferns captain Emily Drumm producing her best innings of the competition with 77 not out from 98 balls.

Earlier, Maia Lewis scored 51 for Wellington before being run out while good support came from Fiona Stickney with 31. Natalee Scripps took two for 36 from her nine overs and Helen Watson one for 22.

Apart from Drumm, Shelly Fruin scored 42 not out, Rebecca Rolls 30 while Kathryn Ramel was 28 not out off 18 balls. Anna Corbin was treated with great respect by the experienced Auckland batsmen. Her 10 overs cost only 14 runs.

The only Wellington wicket taker was Amanda Cooper who took 2-44.
