Dawn Pakistan to advocate equal chances for umpires, referees
5 February 2001

Pakistan and India will press for the postings of their umpires and match referees in the International Cricket Council (ICC) sub-committee meeting in Melbourne scheduled for Feb 7.

Yawar Saeed, member of the committee constituted in Kenya last October, said he would be carrying the international reports of Pakistani umpires and match referees to Australia.

"Sunil Gavaskar (India's representative) will also be pleading the cases of his umpires and match referees," Yawar, a member of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) advisory panel, said.

Yawar said he had a telephonic discussion with the former Indian captain, adding that the two countries would be submitting a joint proposal. "Our umpires and match referees are being ignored despite an overall decline in the standard. We want equal postings with English, Australian and South African umpires and match referees," he said.

Yawar said Pakistan and India would be raising the issue of a standard umpire and match referee fee. He said Pakistan and Indian officials were paid much lesser to what the others were getting. "We want equality for our people," he said.

Yawar said he would be interviewed for the prestigious ICC chief executive's post on Feb 8. He was, however, uncertain if he would get the support of India and Sri Lanka. "I don't know if they have their own candidates for the job. If no, then I am confident they would put their weights behind me," Yawar, who leaves Monday morning, said.

On Feb 8, ICC's board meeting will be held which will be attended by PCB director Brig Munawwar Rana. PCB chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia will attend the Feb 9 to 11 ICC executive board's meeting which will be followed by Test captains meeting to be attended by Moin Khan.
