Trueman marks his birthday with dinner and auction
Staff and Agencies - 6 February 2001

Fred Trueman is this evening celebrating his 70th birthday with a dinner and auction in London.

A recent victim of burglary, the former England and Yorkshire fast-bowler has decided to sell off his extensive collection of memorabilia. The idea is to provide for his children and grandchildren, while ensuring that his valuables don't fall into the hands of thieves.

The top ten items of value will be auctioned at the dinner tonight, while another 170 items will be sold off by silent auction or via website at a later date.

Lot one will be the ball with which he took his 300th Test wicket; Neil Hawke caught by Colin Cowdrey. It is expected to raise between £15,000 – £20,000.
