Selectors look at both divisions when choosing England players - Graveney
Media Release - 9 February 2001

Reacting to recent comments regarding selection for England, David Graveney, Chairman of Selectors, has commented: "When Mark Ramprakash gave his reasons for leaving his former county Middlesex and joining Surrey as it being necessary to play in cricket's "top flight" to further his England aspirations, it set my alarm bells ringing.

"As far as the selection policy for England goes, there is no difference between Division One and Division Two in our eyes, in terms of quality of play.

"All players, in either league were considered equally with regard to an England future...good cricket is good cricket, and the selectors know what they are looking for in terms of the raw materials needed to make it at international level.

"The message that you have to play and perform in Division One to play for England is simply not the case; it's a matter of having to play good cricket to play for England - whatever division you find yourself in."

David Graveney made his comments on cricnet.com, the official web site of the Professional Cricketers Association.
