While the last article recalled the names of some of the past ex-St George's national senior players of the post- and pre-independence era, this article will highlight those national junior players who are presently at the College.

In the Under-14 age-group Stewart Cameron, Ryan Higgins, Krishna Sivakumaran (a likely Sri Lankan?) and Stuart Torr were all selected for the 2000 Partridges, who toured South Africa. Cameron was the captain of this side.

Amazingly there are no national junior players in the Under-15 squad, while the Under-16 group boasts the likes of Sean Barry, James Cameron, Colin and Ian de Grandhomme, and Luke Perigoe who had the honour of captaining the Under-16 side in South Africa last year. All of these boys except Colin also had the distinction of representing Zimbabwe at the Under-16 World Cup in England in 2000. All of these World Cup boys are now playing first eleven cricket for the College.

In the Open age-group, St George's is lacking in national players, although some of the Under-19s are making their mark and the selectors will have to keep an open mind on them. A late developer is always a welcome addition to any national squad.

Over the weekend of 26 January, St George's College played against Lomagundi College. These were the results:

First XI: LOMAGUNDI 160 (S Barry 4/31, D Micklem 3/29). ST GEORGE'S 156 (Q Stein 32). Lomagundi won by 4 runs.

Second XI: LOMAGUNDI 53 (McMillan 4/12, J van Eden 3/12, Shaw 2/14). ST GEORGE'S 54/1. St George's won by nine wickets.

Under-16 A: LOMAGUNDI 79 (A Light 3/19). ST GEORGE'S 81/3. St George's won by seven wickets.

Under-16 B: LOMAGUNDI 19 (Cairns 3/0, Hutchings 3/3). ST GEORGE'S 110. St George's won by nine wickets.

Under-15 A: St George's won by six wickets.

Under-14 A: ST GEORGE's 173/4 dec (S Cameron 57, R Higgins 57, S Torr 37*). LOMAGUNDI 89 (K Sivakumaran 5 wkts). St George's won by 84 runs.

FIRST XI REPORT

A week ago St George's College had won their match against Eaglesvale because of the old maxim: "Catches win matches." This was so true of their match against Lomagundi College. Saints `grassed' six catches and with these dropped chances went the game.

Playing a 50-overs limited match, Lomagundi had reached a comfortable 97 for one off 22 overs. A score of over 200 looked possible. However, tight fast-medium bowling by Sean Barry (four for 31) and clever left-arm spin bowling by Duncan Micklem (three for 29) restricted Lomagundi to 160 all out.

St George's made another shaky start, but the middle and lower order steered Saints towards the 160. The loss of three quick wickets towards the end scuttled their efforts as Lomagundi scraped home by four runs. A fine caught-and-bowled ended the innings of St George's.

For the second week running the College top order failed to get the innings going. The likes of Cameron, Perigoe and de Grandhomme must begin to show their class as they are all junior national players. A close defeat is not easy to absorb but cricket has never been for the fainthearted.
