The Barbados Nation Campbell ready for Busta action
14 February 2001

Sherwin Campbell is ready to take his place in the Barbados team and contrary to reports out of Australia, the West Indies vice-captain will not have an imminent operation on his injured shoulder.

In light of modest returns Down Under, Campbell wants to make an immediate impression in the regional competition with a view to retaining his place for the forthcoming series against South Africa.

"I will definitely be available for Friday. I am looking forward to that game and getting some runs on the board," he said when asked if he would be playing in Barbados' final preliminary Busta match against Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval.

Campbell said he would most likely need an operation on the right shoulder that had been bothering him since last October.

But, it would be some time in the "distant future" - after the South Africa series.

"It has been going on and off," he said about the injury he suffered during last year's Red Stripe Bowl.

"It's not fully recovered as yet, but it should not affect me."

Campbell finished the five-match Test series in Australia with 187 runs (including two half-centuries in the final Test) at an average of 18.70 and he knows exactly what went wrong.

"It was more mental than anything else. I put a lot of pressure on myself," he admitted.

"I got a good start to the tour, but when I got to the Test matches I put too much pressure on myself and I kept making the same mistake over and over."

The West Indies' most reliable opener in the last five years concedes that his place in the Test side is no longer secure.

"As long as you don't perform on tours, your place is always under threat," he said.
