Giles injury worry for England
Charlie Austin - 15 February 2001

A successful morning's work by England's bowlers in the first day of their four-day game in Matara has been overshadowed by an injury to left arm spinner Ashley Giles.

With just seven days remaining until the First Test Match in Galle, Andrew Walpole, the ECB Media Manager, said: "Ashley Giles has increased stiffness in his left Achilles tendon.

"According to Dean Conway, the England physiotherapist, it is not the same injury that he sustained in Kenya, but the recurrence of an older Achilles tendon injury which has troubled him from time to time throughout his career."

Walpole went on to say: "He was taken off the field because we have one eye on the forthcoming Test Match and he will not bowl again in the innings. Whether he bowls again in the match will depend upon our assessment of the injury over the next 24 hours."

Ashley Giles has been unfortunate with injuries before and most recently was forced to miss the ICC KnockOut Trophy because of an Achilles tendon injury.

England brought three spinners to Sri Lanka. Jason Brown however, the uncapped off spinner from Northants, has not played a game in Sri Lanka.
