Historic women's match played at The Wanderers
S Cade - 15 February 2001

A historical first for provincial women's cricket was achieved when Gauteng and Northerns entered the Wanderers arena for the first ever women's cricket match to be played on the hallowed turf of the Bull Ring. Sunday morning, 11 February 2001 was the date and the players were greeted by perfect cricketing weather.

Northerns batting first notched up an impressive 221/6 in their 50 over allocation with Carli Venter going for 81 and Roselle Scheepers 52. Linda Olivier, after a successful World Cup, continued her form with a well-played 36.

For Gauteng, Robyn Hill bowled an impressive line and was rewarded with 4/37 in her ten overs. Kerri Laing assisted with 1/36 in her ten overs.

Gauteng were soon in trouble with the Northerns bowlers keeping it tight and not giving anything away. Gauteng were eventually bowled out for 156 in 48.2 overs with only Daleen Terblanche 50, and Tamara Reeves showing any resistance.

Cri-Zelda Brits 2/17 in 8.4 overs, Cindy Eksteen 2/21 in 9 overs and Lonell De Beer 3/40 in 10 overs were the major wicket takers to help give Northerns the win by 65 runs.
