Ngam undergoes shoulder operation
Bronwyn Wilkinson - 21 February 2001

Eastern Province and South Africa fast bowler Mfuneko Ngam had shoulder surgery in Cape Town this week to repair a torn tendon in his right shoulder. The surgery was performed by UCB shoulder specialist Dr Joe de Beer.

South African team physiotherapist Craig Smith said that Ngam has carried this shoulder injury through the season. It did not prevent him from bowling but it did inhibit his throwing in from the field.

"It was decided to do the operation now while Ngam is also recuperating from his stress fracture of the right leg," said South African team physiotherapist Craig Smith today.

"The shoulder surgery was successful and Ngam will rest his shoulder in a sling for six weeks to allow the tendon to heal before embarking on a four-month rehabilitation and treatment programme to strengthen the shoulder. We are hopeful that he will return to training and bowling/fielding in the pre-season, envisaged to be around July," Smith added.
