Dawn India beat Pakistan to reach final
23 February 2001

Karachi: India overcame arch rivals Pakistan by 77 runs to qualify for the Under-17 Asia Cup final at Bangladesh Krira Shixa Protishan Ground-1 in Dhaka on Thursday.

In the other semi-final, hosts Bangladesh stunned defending champions Sri Lanka by five wickets at Bangabandhu National Stadium.

India, who skipped the inaugural tournament staged in Pakistan last July, made 191 for seven in 45 overs after Pakistan captain Salman Butt won the toss and elected to field first.

Deepak Chougule made the highest score of the match when he hit 40 off 55 deliveries with three fours. Spinners Salman Qadir, Azhar Ali and Azam Hussain claimed two wickets each, conceding 26, 32 and 38 runs respectively.

Pakistan, last year's runners-up, failed to cash in on the opening stand of 41 by Salman Butt (36 off 41 balls with six boundaries) and Khalid Latif (3) as four wickets fell for three runs in 15 balls.

Stuart Binny captured three for 23 and got fine support from Shankara Rao (two for 22) and Bignesh Mohanty (two for 27).
