ACB Steve Waugh speaks about the passing of Sir Donald Bradman
Australian Cricket Board - 26 February 2001

Australian captain Steve Waugh spoke this morning from India about the recent passing of Sir Donald Bradman.

Waugh said:

"Sir Donald united the country, especially after World War II and was an inspiration to so many people. He gave people hope.

"He was a once in a lifetime cricketer, and I don't think there will be someone else like Sir Donald Bradman. He is someone we hold in awe and someone to aspire to.

"We, as Australians, can take inspiration from the way he played the game as he always tried to be one step ahead. He set standards, so even today we can use him as an inspiration.

"I had a one-to-one meeting with Sir Donald in 1999, which was fantastic. What struck me was how humble he was about his achievements and that he wanted to see himself as a normal person. This is a lesson in humility to us all."
