Glamorgan seeking new overseas player
Andrew Hignell - 6 February 2001

The search is on to find an overseas player for the 2001 season following last week`s news that Matthew Elliott would not be returning to Glamorgan this summer. The opening batsman wants to concentrate his non-Test efforts on leading Victoria, his Australian state side, and so the Welsh county are now looking for a suitable replacement.

Steve James, Glamorgan`s captain said, "I don't want to mention any names at this point, but we have identified the need for a batsman and Matthew Elliott will be able to give us some pointers on possible contenders from Australia."

"It's disappointing that Matt will not be returning because he made a big impression last season. I'd kept in close contact with him over Christmas and we were prepared to wait and see whether he would make the Australian squad for the England tour. But he's now been handed the Victoria captaincy and feels he's got to concentrate on that. "

"The one good thing about it is that it does give us a bit more time to find a replacement. It is becoming more difficult to find a suitable overseas player because of the international calendar. But Matt knows his stuff and I'm sure he'll suggest one or two players who are good enough to do an excellent job for us."
