Gibbs, Kemp in one-day side
Peter Robinson - 4 January 2001

Herschelle Gibbs has been recalled to the South African one-day team while Eastern Province all-rounder Justin Kemp comes in for the first time, it was announced at Newlands on Thursday.

The return of Gibbs for Gauteng's Andrew Hall was entirely predictable. Indeed, many felt that Gibbs would be eased back into the South Africa side after his six-month ban via the one-day team rather than the Test side.

As it happened, Gibbs played in the second Test match at Newlands, making a second-ball duck, but there never seemed any doubt that he would be back in the one-day team, coming for Andrew Hall.

Kemp, meanwhile, is one the country's most promising all-round players, and selection convener Rushdi Magiet was to blood young players such as Kemp with an eye to the 2003 World Cup.

It is unlikely that Kemp and Boeta Dippenaar will play in the games in Paarl and Cape Town next week, but if South Africa stretch their 2-0 lead in the six-match series against Sri Lanka, both may be given a run in the last two games.

Allan Donald has also been included in the squad after missing the first two Test matches against Sri Lanka. He has apparently been bowling in the nets and may be given an outing for Free State in a Standard Bank Cup match before the one-day series resumes.

The full squad is: Shaun Pollock (capt), Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Jonty Rhodes, Boeta Dippenaar, Mark Boucher, Nicky Boje, Lance Klusener, Allan Donald, Roger Telemachus, Justin Kemp, Makhaya Ntini.
