2nd Test, South Africa v Sri Lanka, Statistical Highlights

- It was 1528th Test in cricket history.
- It was South Africa's 250th and Sri Lanka's 107th Test match.
- It was the tenth match between these two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 5, Sri Lanka 4, drawn 4.
- It was the fourth match between the two sides on South African soil. The record now reads: South Africa 3, drawn one.
- It was the 141st match on South African soil.
- Ian Howell was making his debut as Test match umpire. He has already stood in four One-Day Internationals. The other umpire Eddie Nicholls was officiating in his fourth Test match.
- Gary Kirsten was playing his 68th Test which equals Hansie Cronje's record tally for South Africa.
- Shaun Pollock was playing his 50th Test. He became seventh South African and 164th player overall to do so.
- Marvan Atapattu was playing his 34th consecutive match for Sri Lanka since appearing against West Indies at Kingstown in 1996-97. With this he equalled the tally of Hassan Tillekaratne. Now only Aravinda de Silva (35) have played more matches on a trot for Sri Lanka than Atapattu.
- Sri Lanka's first innings total of 95 was its lowest against South Africa - home or away. This obliterated the previous lowest of 122 at Centurion in 1997-98.
- It was also the fourth lowest total for Sri Lanka in all Test matches. The lowest still remains 71 against Pakistan at Kandy in 1994-95 followed by 82 against India at Chandigarh in 1990-91 and 93 against New Zealand at Wellington in 1982-83 .
- Sri Lanka in first innings had lost its first four wickets with only 13 runs on the board which was its lowest score at the fall of four wickets. The previous lowest was 14 against New Zealand at Kandy in 1983-84.
- Sri Lanka's start was one of the worst in game's history by a side in the first innings of a Test. The record is on the name of England who lost its first four wickets against South Africa at Johannesburg in 1999-00 with score reading only two. - Shaun Pollock's first innings figures (6-30) was the best for South Africa against Sri Lanka obliterating the previous best of 5 for 48 by Brett Schultz at Colombo SSC in 1993-94. Incidentally the previous best for South Africa against Sri Lanka in South Africa was Allan Donald's 5 for 54 at Centurion in 1997-98.
- Pollock's first innings figures was also the best by a South African skipper in all Tests beating the 6 for 87 by Buster Nupen at Johannesburg in 1930-31.
- The lead of 409 runs was the second highest for South Africa in all Tests after the 465 runs lead against Australia at Durban in 1969-70.
- It was also the 22nd instance of a team getting a lead of 400 or more - second such occasion against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka had conceded a lead of 419 runs to Pakistan at Galle in 1999-00.
- Daryll Cullinan (112) on 65 completed his 4000 runs in Test cricket. He was playing his 64th Test and 104th innings. He became second South African after Gary Kirsten (4556 runs in 68 matches) and 67th batsman overall to do so.
- The hundred was 12th for Cullinan - most for South Africa in Test cricket. Cullinan surpassed fellow teammate Kirsten's tally of 11 hundreds.
- Cullinan has now scored five hundreds against Sri Lanka in 10 Tests which equals the tally of India's Mohammad Azharuddin. Another Indian Sachin Tendulkar, with 6 hundreds from 13 matches, has scored more hundreds than Cullinan in Test cricket.
- Mark Boucher (92) and Lance Klusener (97) provided the fourth instance of two South African batsmen being dismissed in nineties. The details:

- The second wicket partnership of 96 runs between Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis is South Africa's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka. This obliterated the previous highest of 55 between this same pair at Durban in the first match of this series.
- The fifth wicket partnership of 86 runs between Daryll Cullinan and Mark Boucher is South Africa's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka putting into shade the 45 run-partnership between Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener at Colombo SSC in 2000-01.
- Pollock has now taken 29 wickets in 7 matches against Sri Lanka- maximum for South Africa against Sri Lanka. He moved ahead of Allan Donald who has a tally of 26 wickets from 5 matches.
- South Africa was winning a Test match in three days for the 14th time - fifth time since its readmission into Test cricket.
- It was Sri Lanka's fourth defeat within three days. The others being v New Zealand at Christchurch in 1982-83, v Pakistan at Kandy in 1994-95 and v West Indies at St.John's in 1996-97.
- The victory margin of innings and 229 runs was the largest for South Africa and the ninth largest in all Tests. - The defeat was also the heaviest for Sri Lanka by innings margin. Interestingly Sri Lanka's previous biggest defeat in Test cricket also came against South Africa when it lost by an innings & 208 runs at Colombo SSC in 1993-94.
