Crusaders out for a day in the sun
15 January 2001

A cricket match with a difference will be played at Hagley Oval on Sunday when the annual match between the Canterbury Crusaders and a Cystic Fibrosis XI play.

Leon MacDonald will captain the Crusaders in the 40-over match.

The Invitation XI includes former international cricketers, Rod Latham, Lee Germon and Debbie Hockley, All Black coach Wayne Smith, Crusaders coach Robbie Deans and Kingz player-coach Wynton Rufer.

Germon's availability is subject to whether Otago qualifies for the Shell Cup semi-final. If he is available he will captain the Invitation XI.

Spectators will be warmed up by live entertainment from FAB 3 at 10am with the cricket starting at 11am. A rugby goalkicking competition will be held at 11.30am, and an auction of sports memorabilia at 1.30pm.

At 2.15pm two local radio stations (Newstalk ZB and C93FM) will play a double-wicket cricket match of four overs.

A maximum of five overs per bowler, and retirement on scoring 50 runs but with the opportunity to resume batting if required, are the only special rules for the match.

The teams are: Cystic Fibrosis XI - Belinda Colling, Robbie Deans, Dame Susan Devoy, Bruce Dunstan, Chris Flanagan, Grant Fox, Lee Germon, Mark Hadlow, Debbie Hockley, Rod Latham, Andrew Nuttall, Wynton Rufer, Wayne Smith and Bryan Waddle.

Canterbury Crusaders XI - Leon MacDonald (captain), Todd Blackadder, Ben Blair, Sam Broomhall, Daryl Gibson, Ben Hurst, Justin Marshall, Aaron Mauger, Nathan Mauger, Norm Maxwell, Andrew Mehrtens, Scott Robertson, Matt Sexton.
