Rajneesh Gupta - 15 January 2001

  • It was the 1666th ODI in cricket history.
  • It was South Africa's 219th and Sri Lanka's 339th match.
  • It was the 22nd match between these two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 12, Sri Lanka 9,no result 1.
  • Umpires Williams Diedricks and Dave Orchard were officiating in their 31st and 65th match respectively.
  • Dilhara Fernando was making his ODI debut for Sri Lanka. He had already made his Test debut against Pakistan at Colombo SSC in 1999-00. He became 106th player to represent Sri Lanka in shorter version of the game.
  • The partnership of 110 runs between Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana equalled Sri Lanka's highest stand for the opening wicket against South Africa. Roshan Mahanama and Chandika Hathurusinghe who had an identical partnership at Kandy on 22-08-1993.
  • The partnership was also the third highest for the opening wicket by any side against South Africa in a day-night match after the 123 run-partnership between Imran Nazir and Shahid Afridi for Pakistan at Sharjah on 31-03-2000 and 117 run-partnership between Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid for India at East London on 04-02-1997.

  • During the course of their century stand, Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana became the fourth pair to aggregate 1000 runs or more for the first wicket in day-night matches. Others to do so are the Indian pair of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar (1830 runs @ 42.56 in 44 innings), the Australian pair of Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh (1733 runs @ 45.61 in 38 innings) and David Boon and Geoff Marsh (1440 runs @ 41.14 in 35 innings).
  • The second wicket stand of 111 runs between Boeta Dippenaar and Jacques Kallis is South Africa's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka. This obliterated the previous record stand of 87 between Kepler Wessels and Peter Kirsten at Wellington on 02-03-1992.
  • The third wicket unbroken stand of 134 runs between Jacques Kallis and Jonty Rhodes is South Africa's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka. The previous highest stand for third wicket for South Africa against Sri Lanka was paltry 64 between Gary Kirsten and Daryll Cullinan at Lahore on 06-11-1997.
  • It was the second occasion when Kallis was involved in two century partnerships in the same match. The other such occasion for him was against New Zealand at Auckland on 27-03-1999. Kallis, had then added 112 runs for the third wicket with Gary Kirsten and 145 for the fourth wicket with Daryll Cullinan. Kallis has now also equalled Gary Kirsten's South African record of appearing in two century partnerships on most occasions.
  • Dilhara Fernando by conceding 54 runs in his seven overs (@ 7.71) recorded the second worst figures by a Sri Lankan on debut. The record still lies with Anura Ranasinghe who conceded 55 runs in his seven overs against Australia at The Oval on 11-06-1975.
  • The win was South Africa's eighth in as many matches - its joint second best run in ODIs. South Africa had won eight consecutive matches from October to November 1996 and also from January to March 1997 under Hansie Cronje's captainship. However South African record of most consecutive wins is of 10 wins - once again under Hansie Cronje's captainship from January to March 1996.
  • Jacques Kallis won the man of the match award for the 16th time in his career. He is now just two short of Hansie Cronje and Lance Klusener's South African record of 18 MoM awards.
