Oxenford to make Cup Debut
Queensland Cricket - 31 January 2001

Another Queenslander will make a debut in Friday night's Mercantile Mutual Cup match at the Gabba with former Sheffield Shield spinner Bruce Oxenford umpiring his first interstate match.

Oxenford, 40, will officiate in his inaugural interstate One Day match alongside with Queensland's most experienced umpire Peter Parker.

The former Queensland leg-spinner has been fast-tracked since entering the umpiring ranks three years ago, making his ACB Cup 2nd XI debut earlier this season and standing in the Australian Under-19 championships in Hobart.

He was added to the Queensland first class umpires panel during the season but is yet to make his debut in a first class match.

Oxenford played eight first class matches for Queensland, taking 18 wickets between 1991-92 and 1992-93.

He played grade cricket for the Gold Coast until making the switch to umpiring and is one of the few Australia umpires at present with first class cricket experience.

Meanwhile Tasmania will train tomorrow from 4.30pm at the Gabba, including a session under lights on the Gabba.

The Tigers will be without pace bowler David Saker who has been suspended until February 11 by the TCA following an incident in a club match last week.

The Tasmanian selectors have included allrounder Brad Thomas and Adam Polkinghorne in their squad of 13 for the match.
