Dawn New bodies to function from this week
9 July 2001

All the newly formed committees of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be finalised and become operative within next three days.

The names of members and other aspects of the committees were discussed at a meeting, presided over by the PCB chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

A PCB spokesman said that the terms and conditions of the new committees of the PCB was almost ready and passing through the final process.

The PCB has dissolved the advisory council last Sunday and formed five committees, namely development, review, finance and marketing, selection committee and management.

The meeting also discussed the domestic season in detail and decided to bring changes in conformity with the new national administrative order being ushered in the country after the implementation of the new sports policy from Nov 30.

The spokesman said that the domestic structure committee working under Iqbal Qasim, and assisted by Sirajul Islam Bukhari, was asked to submit recommendations in this regard within seven to 10 days which will envisage participation of all districts in the domestic competitions. However, the new system will be applicable from next year when the new sports policy will become functional.

The chairman of the national umpiring council, former Test umpire Mahboob Shah, gave a presentation to the chairman PCB envisaging formation of a secretariat of the council and training and education of the existing umpires on modern lines. It was also suggested to induct fresh blood in umpiring. The main purpose of this is to provide a structure for producing top umpires and for improving the overall standard and education level of the officials in the country. Exchange of umpires with other countries to stand in each other domestic season may also take place, the spokesman added.

The Development Committee, working under the chairmanship of Ramiz Raja, also put up its budget recommendations for the development for infrastructure and nomination of freshly qualified curators to improve pitches for the international and domestic matches.

A committee under the legal advisor of the PCB would study the constitution of the board, associations and election procedures besides revising all the previous contracts, signed by the board.

This committee will work initially for three months. However, it will submit its report within six weeks, thespokesman said.
