Hants in charge despite Notts' last-wicket heroics
Pat Symes - 19 July 2001

Usman Afzaal arrived late from Lord's to discover Nottinghamshire were 74 for nine and he had been barred from batting. Afzaal had to await a final decision on the England team at Lord's before making a rapid trip south.

Nottinghamshire were forced to use 17-year-old replacement Bilat Shafayat instead. But from deep trouble Nottinghamshire recovered thanks to an unlikely last-wicket stand of 135 in 26 overs between Chris Read and Richard Stemp. Stemp hit a career-best 66 before being caught on the long-off boundary leaving Read unbeaten with 76.

Nottinghamshire saved the follow-on and reached 209, but still conceded a first innings lead of 138 to Hampshire.

Adrian Aymes had earlier in the day hit the eighth century of his career and his 112 not out enabled Hampshire to reach 347.

In the Nottinghamshire innings Alan Mullally, Alex Morris and Chris Tremlett each took three wickets on a blameless batting strip with Nottinghamshire never getting over the loss of their captain Darren Bicknell in the first over of the innings.

When Hampshire batted a second time Richard Logan took two early wickets and at one stage Hampshire were 42 for three. Derek Kenway settled down to score 50 not out and at the close, despite the heroics of Read and Stemp, Hampshire were 223 ahead at 85 for three.
