Somerset ease to win after James is injured
Richard Latham - 29 July 2001

Steve James suffered a broken bone in his left hand as Glamorgan slumped to an innings defeat by Somerset inside three days at Taunton.

The home side took a maximum 20 points to maintain the pressure on Championship leaders Yorkshire with their third successive victory.

After a dismal first innings batting display, Glamorgan proved more stubborn second time around and were bowled out for 364, with Jimmy Maher contributing 98 and Matthew Maynard 80.

James had to retire hurt on 77 after being hit by a delivery from Andy Caddick during the morning session and went straight to hospital where X-rays confirmed the break. He will visit a specialist tomorrow.

His departure with the total on 172 without loss proved a vital breakthrough for Somerset as Caddick went on to dismiss Maher and Mike Powell, leaving the visitors 247-3 at lunch.

Maher's 98 came off 166 balls, with 16 fours. Maynard was also in fine form, reaching a half-century off 99 deliveries before becoming one of three afternoon victims for Steffan Jones.

Robert Croft marked his England recall by collecting a pair and, with Mark Wallace also falling to Richard Johnson, Glamorgan were beaten in the extra half hour before tea by an innings and 67 runs.

Caddick picked up the final wicket for match figures of 8-146, having bowled really well in an 11-over spell of 2-19 at the start of the day.

Somerset could afford to spill a few catches as Jones ended with 3-83 and Johnson 2-93.
