Smith century eases West Indies Under-19s to victory
CricInfo - 30 July 2001

An unbeaten century by Devon Smith guided West Indies Under-19s to a comfortable seven wicket win over England Under-19s in their third and deciding One-Day International at Chelmsford.

They rarely looked like failing to reach a target of 183 - a higher total than had looked likely after an early England collapse.

England's bowlers seldom troubled the tourists and even the dismissal of Brenton Parchment for 14 - caught by Ian Bell off Chris Tremlett - could not knock them out of their stride.

Smith eased past his half-century and established a profitable partnership with Rayon Browne who was eventually dismissed for 21 after lifting a Robert Ferley delivery to John Sadler.

Ferley also accounted for Tonito Willett (5) - caught by Stephen Pope - but the tourists still coasted to victory with seven wickets and 12 overs remaining.

Smith formed the backbone of a commanding West Indian display, top-scoring on 102.

Earlier, England had elected to bat on a hard Chelmsford wicket but were immediately in trouble when they lost Bilal Shafayat in the third over, caught by Omari Banks at slip off Kenroy Peters for just five.

Things failed to improve as Gary Pratt (8) edged another Peters delivery to give wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh a simple catch.

The hosts were reduced to a miserable 27 for three when Gordon Muchall fell for a duck after edging a Jermaine Lawson delivery to Baugh when attempting to drive.

But England managed a revival with Bell and Sadler forging a promising partnership. They quickly saw England beyond 50 with a plethora of boundaries until Bell's mistimed drive flicked a Rayon Thomas delivery on to his stumps after scoring 20 from 30 balls.

Sadler quickly followed for 20 as England's attempt to set a daunting total faltered, the Yorkshireman lifting a Browne delivery high to Ryan Austin on the boundary.

Ferley followed for a duck but Kadeer Ali and Tremlett shared a seventh-wicket stand of 81 before Tremlett was bowled by Thomas for 37 and Ali stumped by Baugh, again off Thomas's bowling, for 54.

The innings was wrapped up for 182 after 47.5 overs with Pope run out for five and Justin Bishop bowled by Peters on seven.
