Pravin Amre
Wisden CricInfo staff - July 5, 2001

Wisden overview
Pravin Amre lacked the style and the grace usually associated with subcontinental batting, but was a gutsy counter-puncher who did not flinch in the face of adversity. When he walked in to play his first Test innings at Durban in 1992-93, India were 38 for 4 against a hostile South African pace attack spearheaded by Allan Donald and Brett Schultz. Amre made a valiant 103, and lifted India to a first-innings lead that enabled them to draw the match. But he was left out after only ten more Tests, and spent the rest of the 1990s trying, in vain, to fight his way back into the side. Amre's Test batting average of 42.50 is respectable enough, but it was his attitude -- dour and determined -- that India could really have done with during some trying times. Amit Varma
