One of several ambidextrous West Indian players, Neil McGarrell is a tidy slow left-armer, but he needs to develop more subtle variations, as he depends too much on creating pressure to get wickets and is not a big spinner. But his batting - based on a very simple method - is capable, and he is a superb fielder, as he showed on his one-day debut, against England at Port-of-Spain in 1997-98. A man of few words, he is so unflappable and phlegmatic that he has earned the ironic nickname "The Beast".
