Waugh climbs the centuries list
Wisden CricInfo staff - July 6, 2001

Steve Waugh's century at Edgbaston today was his 26th in Tests, putting him one ahead of India's Sachin Tendulkar. Waugh is now level with Garry Sobers of West Indies, and behind only fellow Australians Allan Border (27) and Don Bradman (29), and India's Sunil Gavaskar (34).

Waugh, who passed 9000 Test runs during his innings, has now made eight centuries against England. This puts him level for Australia with Allan Border and Arthur Morris, and behind only Greg Chappell (9) and Don Bradman (19).

It was the third time Waugh has scored a century in the opening match of an Ashes series. He made 177 not out (his maiden Test century) at Headingley in 1989, and 112 at Brisbane in 1998-99.
