Northants earn victory as Scotland collapse
Robin Reid - 4 June 2001

Scotland's preparations for the ICC Trophy in Canada later this summer suffered a hefty blow as they crashed by 194 runs in their warm-up match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Needing 281 to win, they looked in good shape on 53-0 in the 15th over with openers Bruce Patterson (29) and Dougie Lockhart (26) providing a solid platform.

But a sensational collapse saw them lose eight wickets for 11 runs in seven overs, and with all-rounder Craig Wright unable to bat through injury they crumbled to 86 all out in reply to the hosts' 280-8.

Kevin Innes (3-18), Jason Brown (3-12) and Graeme Swann (3-12) were the main beneficiaries, and Innes found himself removed from the attack by skipper David Ripley when on a hat-trick, having dismissed his county colleague John Blain for a duck with the last ball of an over.

Northamptonshire struggled at the start of their innings, losing Adrian Rollins and Mal Loye cheaply, but Jeff Cook (57) and Graeme Swann (65) retrieved the situation with a third-wicket stand worth 101 in 15 overs.

The real acceleration came from Mike Hussey. Batting down the order, as he does for Western Australia in limited-overs cricket, the left-hander cracked 82 from 74 balls, with a six and nine fours. His efforts boosted Northants to a formidable total, and once the openers had been parted Scotland never threatened to get close.
