Mixed fortunes for Kiwis in league cricket
Lynn McConnell - 5 June 2001

It's been a tough time for Accrington in the Lancashire League this year, and Auckland's Tana Canning has been out of action for the last week.

The all-rounder, who was on the verge of selection for New Zealand this year when his right to international status was the subject of a fast-tracking by the International Cricket Council, has gone down with chicken pox and did not play at the weekend.

His place in the side was taken for two games by former South Australian bowler Joe Scuderi.

In the weekend before, Canning had been in good touch. Playing Colne, Accrington scored 218/9 of which Canning score 57. He then took one for 22 as Colne were dismissed for 98.

The following day a game with Bacup was called off due to rain with Bacup 87/3. Canning had three for 50 when the abandonment came.

In the Hampshire League, Wellington's Ben Jansen has been playing for Liphook and Ripsley and on Saturday, against BAT Sports, who scored 230/7, L&R replied with 231/5 of which Jansen, in one of his best innings of the season, scored 83.

Mathew Sinclair's runs for Cleethorpes in the Yorkshire League dried up when he was out for two in his side's 10-wicket loss to Doncaster. An opening partnership added 32 before Sinclair came in but two runs later he was gone and Cleethorpes struggled through to 130 in their final over.

Doncaster passed the target in only 17.2 overs without loss.
