Statement issued on behalf of Alec Stewart by his lawyer Gerrard Tyrell of Harbottle & Lewis.

Since the outset of this matter Alec Stewart has made it totally clear that he will fully co-operate with any inquiry into the allegations that have been made against him.

On the day that the allegations were first made, Alec answered all the questions put to him by Lord MacLaurin and the ECB concerning the issues that have been raised.

He was asked in January to speak to Sir Paul Condon and did so. He was told by Sir Paul that he was looking into the allegations and would look to talk to Alec and it was agreed that they would meet at some point in the future.

Prior to that meeting, Sir Paul was asked to explain various issues relating to this inquiry but most importantly was asked for copies of any evidence that existed relating to the allegations. At that stage all that was known by Alec about what was being claimed was what was being reported in the press.

The request for this information was repeated in early May.

During the course of last week Sir Paul responded by sending what appears to be a copy of a document detailing comments allegedly made by Mr Gupta about a range of individuals. It does, however, add nothing more about allegations made against Alec which have already been published. As we understand the position, this remains the only so-called evidence that exists after months of inquiries.

Sir Paul will be meeting Alec to discuss these matters further after the end of the current one-day series. The exact date of the meeting is to be fixed on Monday.
