Condon anticipates 'an early meeting' with Stewart
CricInfo - 18 June 2001

Sir Paul Condon has said that he expects to interview Alec Stewart in the near future concerning allegations that he took money for information on matches.

"He is anxious to see me and I am anxious to see him," the head of the Anti Corruption Unit stated today. That meeting will take place; Alec Stewart's lawyers have dates and we are waiting for details for an early meeting.

"I heard over the weekend Alec Stewart and his solicitor say they were available but I just checked with my office this morning and they have not contacted us. We contacted them with all the dates we're available and I look forward to hearing from them.

Condon also revealed how the Anti Corruption Unit have issued MK Gupta, the infamous bookmaker and match fixer, to provide some substance to his claims that Stewart, and other players, accepted money for information, or his evidence will be discarded.

"To bring a closure to this issue I gave him (Gupta) an ultimatum of July 1 to let us know whether he was prepared to be a formal witness," said Condon. "If we do not hear from him, we must assume he is not prepared to co-operate further. Gupta will either agree to be a formal witness or he won't."

Condon clarified his earlier comments (that he was "increasingly frustrated by the inability of Mr Stewart and his advisers to agree a convenient date") by stating that he was merely replying to a question.

"It was not a public criticism, just a factual answer to a factual question," he stated.
