Tiffen renews rivalry with Australians for MCC
Lynn McConnell - 19 June 2001

New Zealand women's cricket Haidee Tiffen added another cricketing string to her bow when appearing for the MCC women's side against the touring Australian women at Southgate yesterday.

Tiffen, a member of the CLEAR White Ferns who won the CricInfo Women's World Cup at Christmas, has been playing cricket in Hampshire.

While the MCC team were well beaten, by 142 runs, Tiffen was able to make her mark on the game by bowling her 10 overs for 46 runs to pick up the wickets of Australian opener Lisa Keightley and middle-order batsman Avril Fahey.

With 34 runs, batting at No 4, Tiffen was easily the pick of the MCC batsmen, who were dismissed for a total of 109 runs, as Olivia Magno took six for 34 from her 10 overs.

In the Lancashire men's league, Tama Canning marked his return from a bout of chicken pox with his first century for the Accrington club 10 days ago.

Playing against Enfield, Accrington scored 195/6 with Canning scoring 115 off 145 balls. His previous highest score, of 98, was scored last year.

He then picked up the ball and took four for 22 as Enfield were all out for 84.

Last weekend against Burnley the news wasn't so good for Accrington as they were all out for 89 of which Canning scored 22. Burnley replied with 90/7 with Canning taking three for 44.

Over the Pennines in the Yorkshire League, Mathew Sinclair moved closer to scoring 1000 runs by the end of June as his club Cleethorpes scored a good win over Scarborough.

Cleethorpes managed a 10-wicket win after Scarborough were all out for 96 in 37.2 overs.

Opening the response, Sinclair and Cleethorpes skipper Mike Smith knocked the runs off themselves in 26.4 overs. Smith was 26 not out while Sinclair scored 73 not out off 62 balls, including seven fours and four sixes.

Sinclair has three more opportunities to score the 131 runs he needs to reach the 1000 mark by the end of the month, including a double-header this weekend against York (away) and Rotherham (home).
