Hampshire's Cricket Chief Steps Down
Vic Isaacs - 24 June 2001

1st Wkt
Tony Baker

Tony Baker (61), Hampshire County Cricket Club's Chief Executive, has today announced his intention to retire from his present roll at the end of October. He will, however, be staying on in a part-time capacity, dealing mainly with cricketing matters.

"Now that the County are established at their exiting new Hampshire Rose Bowl ground, this is the right time to step down and allow a younger man to steer the County on to the next stage in their development", said Tony Baker.

"Having served Hampshire as Honorary Treasurer for eight years before taking over as Chief Executive in 1986, I am pleased that it is felt that my experience will be valuable to the next administration".

Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire's recently-appointed Chairman, paid tribute to Tony Baker's long and loyal service to the game of cricket and, in particular to Hampshire's staff, players, members and supporters.

"I should like to express, on behalf of everyone associated with the club, our deepest sense of gratitude to Tony Baker who has served Hampshire County Cricket with such distinction for so many years", he said. "His greatest achievement of recent times, for which he will be remembered, is in steering the Club during the historic move from Northlands Road to the magnificent new Hampshire Rose Bowl at West End".

Mr.Bransgrove continued; "I am delighted that Tony will remain at the club after he steps down from the position of Chief Executive. Tony will continue to work in a part-time capacity concentrating on cricket admistration. He will also undoubtedly provide invaluable advice and assistance to his successor in a transitional period during the close season and beyond".

Details concerning the identity of Hampshire's new Chief Executive are expected to be released shortly.
