Glamorgan hold nerve to beat Derbyshire
Richard Thomas of the South Wales Evening Post - 27 June 2001

Glamorgan held their nerve to beat Derbyshire by three wickets and go through to the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy last 16.

Chasing 196 to win, the Welsh county edged over the winning line thanks to a patient innings from Mike Powell and an entertaining cameo from Alex Wharf who took 14 off an over from Lian Wharton.

When Powell came to the wicket Glamorgan were in some trouble at 85-4 in the 18th over thanks to a burst of three for nine off 12 balls from Dominic Cork, after they had eased themselves to 73-1 after 13 overs.

Powell then lost Adrian Dale and Darren Thomas, with whom he put on an important 33, before Wharf relieved the pressure with a six and three fours. Glamorgan eventually won with 16 balls remaining.

The winning target was probably a lot less than the Welsh county had feared after Derbyshire won the toss and then proceeded to reach 82-1 off the first 15 overs.

But once Steve Stubbings was dismissed for 47 off 52 balls with seven fours the Derbyshire run rate slowed appreciably thanks to some very accurate bowling from Glamorgan's seamers and spinners.

An adequate score still looked on for Derbyshire while man-of-the-match Cork was at the wicket but he was one of two unnecessary run-outs as the visitors collapsed to 175-4 to 184-8 within four hectic overs.

The key wicket was Cork who was run out backing up after reaching a 65-ball half-century.

After a good start Derbyshire only made 113 runs off the final 30 overs with Adrian Dale the pick of the bowling figures with three for 15 for seven overs.
