ICC Executive Board Media Briefing
ICC Media Release - 19 June 2001
Cricket matters covered by the ICC Executive Board at its meeting this week included:
International Panel Umpires and Referees: the Board confirmed ICC management's recommendation to appoint an Elite panel of full time international umpires and a panel of full time contracted match referees. The start date for both new panels will be April 2002. Final details to be announced on the precise make up of both panels.
Safety of players and umpires: ICC deplores the recent events at Edgbaston
and Old Trafford. Ground security is primarily the concern of each home Board but the ICC has requested that all members supply a detailed report covering local regulations in force at each of its international venues, by the end of July. This will assist ICC in playing a co-ordinating role among member countries.
ICC has a formal policy on the safety issue, which states:
No spectator has a right to enter the field during play and until the players and umpires have left the field after play. No spectator has a right to throw any object at anyone, be they players, umpires or fellow spectators.
It is the responsibility of all countries – as a matter of priority – to take
whatever corrective measures are necessary within the framework of local
laws.
World Cup 2003: a US$ 5 million prize fund will be played for at the 2003
World Cup in South Africa. The record sum – five times larger than the 1999
World Cup in England- begins to address one of the issues raised in the Anti-
Corruption Unit Report about greater levels of player remuneration. Details of seedings, venues and the match programme will be made in late October.
ICC Annual Report and Finance: the first ICC Annual Report has been
published today, containing audited financial details of the international game.
ICC Chief Executive: incoming Chief Executive Malcolm Speed will take up
his new position on 9th July.
ICC Test Championship Trophy: the distinctive mace trophy made its
public debut today and will be presented to the Australian cricket team prior to the start of the Edgbaston Test match.
The £30,000 trophy was produced by Asprey & Garrard and will be presented
to all teams which head the ICC Test Championship, which was introduced at
the start of the England v Pakistan series in May.
ICC Membership: Kenya presented an application to move from Associate to
Full Member status. This was referred and will be followed by an inspection
visit from a group nominated by Cricket Committee-Playing.
Tanzania was upgraded from Affiliate to Associate member status while a
similar application from the Cayman Isles was not accepted at this stage.
Affiliate member status was agreed for Afghanistan, Bahrain, Botswana,
Bhutan, Croatia, Indonesia, South Korea, Lesotho, Maldives and St Helena.
ICC Governance Review: recommendations from a governance review process were accepted by the Board. These will allow the organisation to develop into a modern and contemporary business staffed by professional managers responsible for the growth, development and revenues of the sport.
