Others believed more firmly in well-built Queenslander Peter Burge than he did in himself, and throughout his career he seemed beset by self-doubt that seemed unaccountable when the true nature of his talent emerged. His 160 at Headingley in July 1964 singlehandedly wrested the Ashes from England's grasp, his hooks and pulls from the second new ball like blows from Vulcan's hammer, and his 120 at Melbourne in January 1966 ensured that the trophy stayed in Australian hands. A brutal manhandler of bowling at first-class level, his highest score of 283 in October 1963 took only seven and a half hours.
