Mike Kasprowicz never gets picked in full-strength Australian sides, yet time and time again has answered the emergency call and given his country yeoman service. Burly and strong as befits the schoolboy rugby international he was, he bustles to the wicket, bowls fast outswing with an open-chested action and in availing conditions, on a humid morning at the Gabba for instance, can be unplayable. He has made a point of teaching himself to bowl with a soft old ball on flat pitches. Among his achievements are two seven-wicket hauls in Tests and a hat-trick for Queensland. Cheerful willingness alone will get him more tours yet. Greg Baum
