The teenaged Drum's career received a racing start when his Auckland coach John Bracewell described Drum's right-arm fast-medium bowling style as classically correct. With this recommendation Drum was quickly into the Auckland side, before making the New Zealand squad for the 1997-98 one-day series in Australia - without playing a game. The Drum saga took a typical twist when he became yet another promising new-ball bowler with a back problem. His career was re-ignited in 2000-01 when, with a less-than-classical style but admirable courage, Drum led the first-class wicket-takers with 48 at 18.25. This gained Drum a place in a Test against Pakistan, but without improving his luck. He bowled only eight overs before his back injury recurred, but the selectors had seen enough to grant him a recall for the VB Series in Australia in 2001-02. But by the end of that winter, Drum's career was over for good. A qualified travel agent, Drum felt he was not earning enough from the game, and quit after New Zealand's series-levelling victory over England at Auckland in April 2002. Greg Baum
