People sat up and took notice when Steve Waugh complimented Daryl Tuffey after his first Test at Hamilton in early 2000. A tall, strapping Maori, Tuffey had a useful outswinger, a strong back and a big heart. Obviously a player with a future, Tuffey was taken into the New Zealand development system which tends to deal a lot in bowling theories. So Tuffey went through the long trek to Zimbabwe and South Africa in 2000-01 as a fringe bowler - but a promising one - and was rested. Tuffey now decided on his own bowling future. He would forget about the theories, and return to his own style of bowling, which was as fast as he possibly could. He had spectacular success against Pakistan, taking 13 one-day wickets and 16 in the Tests, and in March 2002 he picked up a career-best 6 for 54 against England at Auckland. Tuffey may lack the stylish polish of other new-ball bowlers, but he is as hard-working as any of them. Don Cameron
