The oldest and longest-serving first-class cricketer in New Zealand, Bradburn is living proof that earnest and hard work will eventually bring reward. Ear-marked as a promising teenaged player (he is the son of the 1963-64 Test opener Wynne Bradburn), Grant Bradburn soldiered on solidly as an offspinner and a versatile and reliable batsman for Northern Districts over the years. However, his bowling appeared to lack bite and his way to the top was blocked first by the highly aggressive John Bracewell, then by the slow left-arm fashion established by Daniel Vettori. Then in 2000-2001, his 15th home season, Bradburn found himself in both the New Zealand Tests and one-day international sides. The crowning moment came when Bradburn won the award as the outstanding player in domestic cricket in 2000-2001, the man regarded highest as the cricketers' cricketer. Don Cameron
