Backyard Test hits Carterton on Sunday
Lynn McConnell - 2 March 2001

Carterton is used to big sporting occasions, usually with an oval ball, but on Sunday the Gray family home on Carters Line just outside of town will see a cricket match to remember.

The CLEAR Black Caps are coming to town to play the State Backyard Test.

The Grays won the opportunity to host the match after entering a draw as State Insurance customers.

They run a dairy farm and the Black Caps are expecting some tricky playing conditions.

However, coach David Trist is non-plussed.

"These are pretty tough playing conditions, but I am pleased to be able to draw on some rural background to be able to advise the team.

"I breed beef cattle on a small farm near Christchurch, so will certainly be able to develop strategies for cow pats and to counter the dangers of the electric fence.

"Whether this will be enough against Dougie's Angels remains to be seen on Sunday," he said.

Dougie's Angels take their name from local sporting identity and former first-class cricketer Doug Bracewell.

Dougie's Angels are captained by Karen Bracewell.

Their side is: Karen Bracewell (captain), Nicole Bouton, Judy-Ann Butler, Sacha Butler, Charlotte Capes, Rosalind Chappell, Louise Gray, Wendy Hull, Laura Pascall, Elizabeth Perry, Rewa Pomare, Justine Robertson, Rebecca Gray, Bridgette Gray, Amber Gray.

Up against them will be an experience Black Caps combination.

It is: Stephen Fleming (captain), Mark Richardson, Matthew Bell, Mathew Sinclair, Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Adam Parore, Daniel Vettori, James Franklin, Chris Martin, Daryl Tuffey, Paul Wiseman.

Play starts in the game at 1pm on Sunday.
