To bat or not to bat? That is the question facing the two captains Stephen Fleming (New Zealand) and Moin Khan (Pakistan) should they win the toss at Eden Park tomorrow.

Fleming, who has hardly won a toss all season, is probably hopeful that Moin has to make the decision for him.

The portable pitch being used for the first time in any game in Auckland tomorrow, and for the first time in a Test match in New Zealand, has everyone scratching their heads.

Fleming described the situation as "confusing."

"Who knows? That's the thing. There is a bit of grass on it, and also a little bit of moisture, but will it last?" he asked.

Today the inclination was to go into the game with three fast-medium bowlers and one spinner, but that wasn't necessarily the final outcome.

"The 3:1 situation is the more likely at this stage. That puts the onus on the top seven batsmen, Adam Parore included.

"They've got to get a foundation with the runs. We had a luxury there with Daniel Vettori batting at eight but we don't have that now.

"And we have still got to take 20 wickets to win the Test," he said.

Fleming was not looking to the injury problems the Pakistanis have struck as an advantage to New Zealand.

"They are a natural side who rely on individual skills more than team unity.

"We know what we have to do in terms of our own disciplines," he said.

Moin Khan said Pakistan were struggling with the fitness of some of their players.

Inzamam-ul-Haq was only a 50/50 proposition today and a final decision would be made on him tomorrow.

Similarly, a final decision on the bowling balance of the Pakistan side would be made after looking at the pitch tomorrow.

But the prospect of off spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed playing together was a genuine prospect.

Playing without the experience of Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar would not be easy but the side had come through the disruptions and would still be a force, he said.
