Campbell in reminder to selectors as Busta XI draw with South Africa
MWP - 7 March 2001

South Africa and the West Indies Busta XI drew their three-day match at the Everest Club in Georgetown, Guyana. Play was halted six overs short of the day's official close with the Busta XI on 155 for four in pursuit of a target of 365.

South Africa declared their second innings on 289/7 after lunch and left the Busta XI 50 overs to bat. The First Test between South Africa and West Indies begins at the nearby Bourda ground on Friday.

The Busta XI's second innings started like the first with Sherwin Campbell in aggressive mood. Allan Donald was driven and hooked for 36 runs in six overs and Makhaya Ntini's six overs cost 45 runs as Campbell racked up 15 boundaries in the course of his 95-ball score of 86.

The deposed West Indian vice-captain has reminded the selectors that he can compete with the best. Opening partner Daren Ganga is another Test candidate who enhanced his claims. He played well for 35 to add to his impressive first innings of 80.

Lance Klusener was the surprise package in the SA bowling attack. Bowling offcutters off a shortened run, he showed his adaptability to slow wicket bowling. Two wickets for five runs in eight overs was the result.

Earlier in the day, South Africa's lower middle order took the chance to warm up for this weekend's Test match. Daryll Cullinan didn't add to his overnight score of 24 but it took an exceptional one-handed diving catch in the covers by Tonito Willett to dismiss him.

The other not out batsman, Neil McKenzie, batted slowly for 16 but his partner Mark Boucher compensated by driving fluently from the start. Boucher's 48 off 49 balls confirmed the good form shown in his first innings half-century. Lance Klusener went on the rampage after lunch, peppering the palm trees with four sixes and six fours on his way to 60. Nicky Boje was 30 not out when the declaration came.

Ryan Hinds was unable to bowl during the day and his spin partner Sulieman Benn's figures suffered late in the day from Klusener's assault. Benn's four wickets eventually cost 111 runs off 25 overs. Mervyn Dillon took no wickets but had a good work-out ahead of the Test, his eleven overs costing less than three an over.
