Dolphins and Strikers head for a draw
Craig Ray - MWP - 10 March 2001

The three-day Supersport Series Shield match between the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins and the Highveld Strikers looked set for a draw at the conclusion of the second day on Saturday.

Play was suspended due to bad light with 20 overs still to be bowled in the day, with the Strikers on 174 for three.

They were responding to the home side's first innings total of 360 all out. The Dolphins resumed the day on 250 for six and added 110 runs in the morning session thanks largely to an unbeaten 89 from Wade Wingfield.

The talented 24-year-old began the day on 25 and stood by as his colleagues fell around him.

The Strikers put on 49 for the first wicket, before former test opener Adam Bacher was caught at mid on by Wingfield off the bowling of Goolam Bodi.

That brought Stephen Cook, son of former South African test player Jimmy, to the crease. He and Sven Koenig put on 103-runs for the second wicket.

Koenig was caught at cover point by Rhodes off the bowling of Bodi for 76 in the final session. His innings included six fours and four sixes.

Zander de Bruin (0) was then caught at slip by Mark Bruyns off Robbie Macqueen, who bore the brunt of the Koenig onslaught.

With Cook and Nic Pothas at the crease the familiar sight of heavy cloud in Durban forced the umpires to offer the light to the batsmen, who did not hesitate to take it, with Cook on 55 and Pothas on six.
