Orissa hold advantage against J&K
Staff Reporter - 12 March 2001

Orissa who were powered to 369/3 by the end of the first day's play by an awesome batting display by Rashmi Parida and Pravanjan Mullick, struggled to keep the momentum going on the second day against Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy pre-quarter-final match at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, on Monday.

J&K medium pacer Vijay Sharma did the damage with figures of 26-2-98-5 as Orissa's first innings finished at 501. Abdul Qayoom picked up 3/79 and Surendra Singh, who was among the 25 Indian probables for the Australian series, went wicketless.

Parida, who was 194 overnight, took his score past 200 early in the day. He was dismissed after making 220 runs, caught by R Bali off the bowling of Sharma. Parida struck 35 boundaries in his innings as he put together a partnership of 358 runs for the fourth wicket with Mullick.

Mullick was unlucky to have missed out on his double hundred, as he was bowled by Sharma after making 191 runs with the help of 4 sixes and 22 fours off 251 deliveries. He was the sixth wicket to fall at the score of 463.

The Orissa batting caved in with the fall of wickets at regular intervals. G Gopal (20) and Debashish Mohanty (17) were the only other batsmen to get to double figures.

J&K made a disastrous start, losing two quick wickets. Both the openers R Bali (5) and Vidya Bhaskar (1) were sent back to the pavilion by Ajay Barik. Kavaljit Singh and V Taggar (10) tried to steady the swaying J&K innings but Mohanty sent back Taggar to reduce J&K to 27/3.

D Mahajan (24) and Kanwaljit Singh added 44 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was caught by Barik off J Das at 71. Ashwani Gupta (16) and Kavaljit Singh took J&K to 102/4 at the close of play. Kavaljit Singh has been the corner stone of J&K batting so far with an unbeaten 42 off 126 balls, inclusive of five strokes past the ropes. Barik has been the most successful of the bowlers with figures of 13-4-28-2.
